What is an mDL reader?
An mDL reader is a device that reads a mobile driver’s license from a customer’s phone and checks that it is genuine. Tap2iD Go reads the ID over NFC or QR and checks the issuing state’s digital signature under ISO/IEC 18013-5. That is a stronger check than looking at a picture of a license on a screen.
Which mobile IDs does Tap2iD Go accept?
Tap2iD Go works out of the box with Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet and every other mobile ID the TSA accepts, including state ID apps and the U.S. Passport ID pass in Google Wallet. Customers tap their phone over NFC. Apps that show a QR code are read through an attached barcode scanner.
Does Tap2iD Go scan and authenticate physical driver’s licenses?
Yes. Plug your existing 2D barcode scanner into Tap2iD Go’s USB-A port. Tap2iD Go scans and authenticates the PDF417 barcode on the back of all U.S. driver’s licenses and shows the same result screen it uses for mobile IDs.
Do I need drivers or software to connect Tap2iD Go to my POS?
No. Tap2iD Go connects to any POS or host over USB with no drivers or software to install. It sits between your scanner and your POS and passes product barcodes straight through, so your POS works as it does today.
Which states’ mobile driver’s licenses work with Tap2iD Go?
Tap2iD Go works with mobile driver’s licenses that follow ISO/IEC 18013-5, the standard U.S. states use. The list of issuing states grows every few months. See our U.S. mDL state tracker for the current list.
